Mary Bomar's fraudulent investigation
In April 2006, Park Service Director Mary Bomar ordered an internal investigation into claims that the planned Flight 93 Memorial is actually a terrorist memorial mosque, built abound a giant Mecca-oriented crescent. Bomar's investigation was a total fraud, concluding, for instance, that it isn't possible to calculate the orientation of the crescent because the site-plan has not been geo-referenced. (Page 2, PP2 of September 2006 summary report. Page 1 here.)
In fact, the original Crescent of Embrace site-plan was drawn on a topo map that the Memorial Project provided to all participants in the design competition. A topo map is the epitome of a geo-referenced map. North marked on a topo map is true north, which is the only piece of information needed to calculate the orientation of the crescent. Just connect the tips of the crescent, form the perpendicular bisector, and calculate how many degrees it points from north (53.4).
Also known are the crash-site coordinates, which is all that is needed to calculate the direction to Mecca (55.2° clockwise from north). All of this is trivially easy to verify. Just use the Mecca-direction calculator at Islam.com to get a graphic of the direction to Mecca from the crash site and place it over the crescent site plan:
Somerset PA is ten miles from the crash-site. The "qibla" is the direction to Mecca. Red lines show the orientation of the crescent. The crescent points 1.8° north of Mecca. (Click for larger image.)
A request for oversight
Because it is the director's office that has been covering up the Mecca-orientation of the crescent, oversight can only come from Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne himself. Several people sent letters to Secretary Kempthorne two weeks ago, showing how the giant Mecca-oriented crescent remains completely intact in the so called redesign. But Mr. Kempthorne also needs to know that he is getting bad information from his subordinates in the Park Service. Thus a request for all readers of this post: if you have a minute, please copy and paste this entire post into an email for Secretary Kempthorne.
We don't need for the secretary to understand all the terrorist memorializing features in the design, or the numerous proofs of intent that architect Paul Murdoch included so that his accomplishment will be undeniable once it is a fait accompli. It is enough that he be concerned about features that can be readily interpreted as terrorist memorializing, whether they are intended or not. As Congressman Tancredo put it: we need "a new design that will not make the memorial a flashpoint for this kind of controversy and criticism."
But even getting to the most basic facts about what is in the present design requires getting past Mary Bomar's fraudulent report, which tries to pretend that there is nothing that can even be interpreted as untoward.
Mary Bomar's intellectually dishonest "experts"
In addition to claiming that topo maps are not geo referenced, Mary Bomar's internal investigation cites a small number of academic experts, all of whom spout nothing but the most absurd non sequiturs. One is Dr. Daniel Griffith, professor of "geo-spatial information" at the University of Texas. About Alec Rawls' analysis of the Mecca orientation of the giant crescent, Dr. Griffith writes:
The Memorial Project knows this, but it is committed to defending the crescent design, so it keeps using its doubts about intent as an excuse for denying the facts. Dr. Griffith, for instance, is telling every reporter who will listen that there is no such thing as the direction to Mecca. "Anything can point toward Mecca," he told the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, "because the earth is round." One billion Muslims face Mecca five times a day to pray, and Griffith pretends there is no such thing as facing Mecca!
Of course he knows better. The first thing that Griffith's report does is calculate the direction to Mecca:
Bomar expert #2
Dr. Kevin Jaques, specialist in Islamic sharia law from the University of Indiana, acknowledges that the Mecca-oriented crescent is similar to the mihrab around which every mosque is built, but says:
Like Daniel Griffith, Mr. Jaques is trying to make hay of the fact that Mecca orientation does not by itself imply intent. So what? Intentional or not, it is unacceptable for the central feature of the Flight 93 memorial to be a geometric match for the central feature of a mosque. Jaques is pretending that the questions he raises about intent somehow make the facts irrelevant.
Professor Jaques also dismisses the likeness between the Mecca-oriented crescent and a traditional Islamic mihrab by noting that lots of religious structures have prayer-direction indicators, not just mosques:
Project spokesmen know the truth, and are lying about it
Memorial Project spokesmen have followed the lead of these academic frauds, using doubts about intent as a pretext for denying the facts. Asked about Rawls' Mecca orientation claim, Patrick White, vice president of Families of Flight 93, denied it:
Joanne Hanley has done the same:
These are your subordinates Mr. Kempthorne. Please do not let them get away with this fraud. Congressman Tancredo is demanding answers from Director Bomar and many of us are hoping that you will do the same. There is not much time. Construction on Paul Murdoch's terrorist memorial mosque is about to begin.
Sincerely,
Kender MacGowan

One is Dr. Daniel Griffith, professor of "geo-spatial information" at the University of Texas. About Alec Rawls' analysis of the Mecca orientation of the giant crescent, Dr. Griffith writes:
... Mr. Rawls's arithmetic calculations appear to be correct ... [but] ... just because calculations are correct does not make the resulting numbers meaningful.Dr. Griffith's point, it seems, is that the mere fact of Mecca orientation does not imply intent. Who said it did? The way Murdoch proves intent is by repeating his Mecca orientations (scroll down to the last section here). But intent is not the only thing that matters. Even without terrorist memorializing intent, it is inappropriate to plant a giant Mecca oriented crescent on the crash site.
The Memorial Project knows this, but it is committed to defending the crescent design, so it keeps using its doubts about intent as an excuse for denying the facts. Dr. Griffith, for instance, is telling every reporter who will listen that there is no such thing as the direction to Mecca. One billion Muslims face Mecca five times a day to pray, and Griffith pretends there is no such thing as facing Mecca!
Of course he knows better. The first thing that Griffith's report does is calculate the direction to Mecca:
I computed an azimuth value from the Flight 93 crater site to Mecca of roughly 55.20°.
Bomar expert #2
Dr. Kevin Jaques, specialist in Islamic sharia law from the University of Indiana, acknowledges that the Mecca-oriented crescent is similar to the mihrab around which every mosque is built, but says:
...just because something is 'similar to' something else does not make it the 'same'.Yes, well, similar--very, very similar--is exactly the problem.
The biggest hole in [Rawls'] argument is that all of the elements he points to are common architectural features that one would find in a church or synagogue. The mihrab originated in pre-Islamic buildings and can be found in temples, churches, and synagogues around the Mediterranean. This is logic? Because Christian churches are often oriented to the east, that somehow makes it okay to build the Flight 93 memorial around a half-mile wide Mecca oriented crescent? If this is "the biggest hole in [Rawls'] argument," then there are no holes in Rawls' argument.
Rawls' claims are untrue and "preposterous," according to Patrick White, Families of Flight 93 vice president. "We went through in detail all his original claims and came away with nothing."In fact, Patrick White is fully aware of the Mecca orientation of the giant crescent. At the Memorial Project's public meeting in July he argued that the almost-exact Mecca orientation of the giant crescent cannot be intended as a tribute to Islam because the inexactness of it would be "disrespectful to Islam."
Joanne Hanley has done the same:
"Alec Rawls bases all of his conclusions on faulty assumptions," said Joanne Hanley, the superintendent of the Flight 93 National Memorial. "In addition, the facts are twisted and people are misquoted, all to serve his intended purpose."But she too has admitted the Mecca-orientation of the giant crescent, telling Mr. Rawls in a 2006 conference call that she wasn't concerned about the almost-exact Mecca orientation of the crescent because: "It isn't exact. That's one we talked about. It has to be exact." (Crescent of Betrayal, download 3, page 145.)

America? We need to talk.
Specifically we need to talk if you are a conservative and or consider yourself a patriot, and not one of those traitorous patriots on the left, who actually speak more like an enemy of the state than a proud citizen of the greatest country ever anywhere.
I need to know what you are thinking.
Specifically I need to know why Rudy Giuliani is leading in the polls?
Can you honestly say that Rudy is a conservative?
He has stood against the 2nd Amendment, for gay rights (which are in essence special privileges for a group of people that have made a choice) been in favor of illegals (and the old saw of "He did it to reduce crimes" simply shows that he can compromise his principles with the best of them) and ran around on his wife, publically, and then moved in with a gay couple (probably because nobody else would have him at that moment) showing that his adherence to vows he willingly takes is suspect at best.
If he was so willing to toss aside the oath he took for marriage, a personal oath that is supposed to come from the heart and be meant with every fiber in your body, how serious is he going to take the oath of president?
With the nomination of Rudy the GOP slides ever leftward surrendering gay issues for certain, and possibly giving up gun rights and illegal alien issues.
What issues are you going to be willing to give up in '08? What about in 2012?
In short, Rudy is NOT a conservative, and has never claimed to be.
Sure, he cleaned up New York but New York is NOT the United States, and the things he did to clean up New York are not gonna work for the country as a whole. For instance, giving illegals a pass to help with the crime rate is not gonna work when illegals ARE the crime that needs to be dealt with, and dealt with WITHOUT COMPROMISE. Putting more boots on the ground AT THE BORDER is the first order of business, and Rudy has already said we can't possibly deport millions of people.
I call bullshit on that one. This, people, is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and we CAN do whatever we set our minds to do. We beat back the fascists in WW2, stopped communist aggression and won the cold war, put a man on the friggin moon and gave the world damned near every decent advancement for humanity in the last century.
Affordable automobiles?
That was us.
The highest rate of home ownership in history?
That was us.
The polio vaccine?
Us again.
Oh yeah, and that whole freedom thingy?
Ours....from the get go.
Now why and how we did what we have done is the one thing you should be pondering at this moment. How did we do it?
Freedom.
Men have the freedom in this country to succeed or fail on their own merits, without interference by the state. To accomplish this end we need a government that is small and doesn't meddle where it shouldn't meddle, which means we need a government that believes in states rights, a government that promotes Federalism and realizes that the federal government is not there to solve all the problems that people have.
And the one person that is running for President that embodies those ideals, that has shown consistently that he is a Federalist that believes in states rights first, is Fred Dalton Thompson.
Now many people out there are saying Fred is lazy.
Let me tell you something. If being a successful lawyer, prosecutor, lobbyist, actor and State Senator is the job history of a lazy man then dammit give me more lazy men. Not to mention that unlike so many others that could get a mention here Fred GAVE UP his Senator seat when he felt he had done what he set out to do. He came, He served, He went back to his life.
And now, the Republic needs a man like Fred, and Fred knows it. He may not seem all fired up to do the job, but that's because so many of you out there don't understand Fred. Fred is the Quiet Man. The man that sees a job that needs done, and simply sets about to doing it, not taking every possible opportunity to crow about his accomplishments. That's because Fred is NOT a career politician. Fred is a patriot, who loves his country and wants to help out and set her back on the course that has brought us to the point we are at now.
Fred is exactly what we need right now at this point in history. He is the only man running that has consistently shown a concern for doing the right thing, with a strong belief in states rights and a refreshing honesty that embodies exactly the kind of person that should be running this country, but has been absent from the national stage for far too long.
Vote for Fred Dalton Thompson

Listed below are the positions of the current front runner for the Office of President of the United States.
Now looking at that one must wonder why anyone would support Hillary Clinton for President, right? Except these aren't Hillary's positions (well, they are but that's another story), oh no, these positions are the ones taken by Rudy Guiliani, the "conservative" that is the current front runner of the GOP.
All a conservative can do at this point is shake their heads and say "WTF?" Really....can anyone, ANYONE, point out a difference between hillary and rudy except that rudy looks better in a dress?
Anyone?
Abortion: Supports
Taxpayer support of abortion: Supports
Embryonic stem cell research: Supports
Federal marriage amendment: Opposes
Same-sex domestic partnerships and civil unions: Supports
Open homosexuals in the military: Supports
Amnesty for illegal aliens: Supports
Tough penalties for employers of illegal aliens: Opposes
Sanctuary cities that ignore immigration law: Supports

After Jay from Stop the ACLU wrote this morning about a currency company being raided the Ron Paul Nuts descended on him like a pack of ravenous kooks.
While I am not going to get involved in the money argument, I do have to back the people that claim that Paul's supporters are, quite frankly, insane. Ron Paul backs an isolationist policy and has said that our foreign policy caused 9-11.
ON the other hand his statement that he gets his orders from the Constitution is the best thing I have heard a politician utter since Reagan graced the national stage.
To all you Ron Paul nuts, welcome...comments ARE moderated but will eventually get published when I get back from my weekly meeting with Karl Rove and the rest of the Empire's architects at the Official Vast Right Wing Conspiracy Steakhouse and Bordello, conveniently located at Halliburton HQ, Home of the New and Improved Bush-Hurricane-O-Matic, newly armed with a Seismic Disruptor Ray.

Got this in email and had to share it:
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!
Twas the month before Christmas
When all through our land,
Not a Christian was praying
Nor taking a stand.
Why the Politically Correct Police had taken away,
The reason for Christmas - no one could say.
The children were told by their schools not to sing,
About Shepherds and Wise Men and Angels and things.
It might hurt people's feelings, the teachers would say
December 25th is just a "Holiday."
Yet the shoppers were ready with cash, checks and credit
Pushing folks down to the floor just to get it!
CDs from Madonna, an X BOX, an I-pod,
Something was changing, something quite odd!
Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa
In hopes to sell books by Franken and Fonda.
But as Targets were hanging their trees upside down
At Lowe's the word Christmas - was no where to be found.
At K-Mart and Staples and Penny's and Sears
You won't hear the word Christmas; it won't touch your ears.
Inclusive, sensitive, Di-ver-si-ty
Are words that were used to intimidate me.
Now Daschle, Now Darden, Now Sharpton, Wolf Blitzen
On Boxer, on Rather, on Kerry, on Clinton!
At the top of the Senate, there arose such a clatter
To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter.
And we spoke not a word, as they took away our faith
Forbidden to speak of salvation and grace.
The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded.
The reason for the season, stopped before it started.
So as you celebrate "Winter Break" under your "Dream Tree"
Sipping your Starbucks, listen to me.
Choose your words carefully, choose what you say
Shout MERRY CHRISTMAS, not Happy Holiday,
Our Countries were founded under the Christian way
To our "guests" I can say,
If You don't like it, You don't have to stay!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

My good friend and internet security guru John Bambenek has uncovered and is covering a story of ghastly evil that has been spawned in the bastion of idiocy San Francisco.
I am firmly of the belief that 'frisco (the folks that live there hate it when you call it "frisco") should be quarantined from the rest of humanity, and all the simpletons in berserkely should be sent there when we do it. Dig a moat across the peninsula, tear down the bay bridge and the golden gate bridge and cut off communications by jamming all signals and cutting their power and phone lines. Then blockade the docks.
I am serious. Those people are friggin nuts.....why just the other day they came down hard on Barack Obama for saying we need to fix social security.
Anyway, it seems the ACLU (paragon of defense against all things sensible and cheerleader of the Religion of Secularism) has filed suit against the U.S. Government for having the balls to give people a paid day off for Christmas.
If this is allowed to stand, if this suit gains traction and is seen through to its conclusion, and Christmas is lost to us, then they had better cease giving hoidays for anything, including Ramadan.
Personally I think the ACLU has their heads up their collective asses and should be tried as seditious morons and then given cut rate lobotomies in a mexican medical clinic.
But that's just me.
So click the link in the title of this post and read all about it. As John says, the ACLU could go down as the law firm that stole Christmas.

Support Tom Tancredo's call to scrap the crescent memorial
The Park Service has a history of keeping the Secretary of the Interior in the dark about the decisions it makes in his name. It is likely that Secretary Dirk Kempthorne has never been told about the many warnings of Islamic symbolism in the planned Flight 93 Memorial. Please help bring Dirk into the loop by pasting the following letter (or one of your own) into an email for him.
Secretary Kempthorne's phone number is 202-208-7351.

Please help bring Dirk into the loop by pasting the following letter (or one of your own) into an email for him.
Dear Secretary Kempthorne:
Please heed Congressman Tom Tancredo's call to completely scrap the present design for the Flight 93 Memorial. The original Crescent of Embrace design would have planted a bare naked crescent and star flag on the crash site:
The memorial plaza that sits roughly in the position of the star on an Islamic flag marks the crash site. (Click pics for larger images.)
All the redesign did was add some trees to the west of the original crescent:
Aside from the re-coloring of the site-plan image, the only actual change in the design is the additional arc of trees to the rear of a person facing into the original crescent.
The Park Service promised Congressman Tancredo in 2005 that Islamic iconography would be removed from the memorial. Instead, this iconography has only been very slightly disguised. Every particle of the original Crescent of Embrace design remains completely intact in the redesign.
The giant crescent points to Mecca
In September 2005, a half dozen different bloggers verified that a person facing directly into the original Crescent of Embrace would be facing almost exactly at Mecca. That makes the crescent a mihrab, the central feature around which every mosque is built.
Face into the crescent to face Mecca:
Left: mihrab from the Great Mosque in Cordoba Spain. Right: Crescent of Embrace also faces Mecca. The green circle is from the Mecca-direction calculator at Islam.com. When it is placed over the original Crescent of Embrace site plan, the Mecca-direction line (the "qibla") almost exactly bisects the crescent.
You can plant as many trees around a mosque as you want and it will still be a mosque. But this isn't just the world's largest mosque. The planned memorial is also full of terrorist memorializing features.
Please hear my voice along with those of Congressman Tancredo and Tom Burnett Sr., who is refusing to allow Tom Jr.'s name to be used in the crescent design. The memorial to Flight 93 should not be a terrorist memorial mosque.
Sincerely
Secretary Kempthorne's phone number is 202-208-7351.

I am serious.
Why are we fighting?
What good is victory?
Nobody loves a winner, especially a cocky one that has all the advantages, such as a superior military capability, in this instance.
I am liking the liberals ideas in rooting for the underdog terrorist cells that would gladly kill them too. I mean, if any of them rooting against the troops that protect their homeland are ever captured (and not kidnapped because those guys aren't terrorists but freedom fighters fighting a war) and beheaded I am sure that the last thoughts through their minds won't be "Why the hell did I root for these guys again" but rather "YES!!!! These guys rock with all their beheading of us infidels...I should have converted to isGAAAAKKKKKK........"
In the same vein of the democrats rooting for an underdog I have a few ideas.
From now no more Special Olympics. We'll take the Special Olympians and stick them in the regular olympics and then we'll throw sticks at the regular olympians....or make them run through waist deep water.
In the swimming competition we'll give the handicapped folks a boat and make the regular swimmers wear 30 pound lead helmets.
I also agree with the liberals idea that people should not feel bad about themselves. Earned self esteem is so cheap...well...it isn't actually cheap, because it's earned so it's real, but it cheapens all the talk about how good people are, even when they are lazy no count bastards.
So from now on we can't talk bad about anyone but white christian males, because it is white christian males that actually run the world.
SO I have a solution to that too, because I am tired of being a person that oppresses others simply by the fact that I was, in fact, born a white christian male.
Henceforth I am going to be an African American Lesbian Buddhist with one leg, a stutter and a slight case of downs.

Jack Idema and I are sitting in the lunchroom at Halliburton's HQ (you should see this place.....the cutlery is gold plated, the dishes, which get thrown out after you use them, are the finest china, luxery dining appointments that you wouldn't believe, and everyone gets their own topless waitress to take home........God Bless Government Contracts) the other day discussing an upcoming mission that was assigned to us.
We gotta dress up like homeless guys and monitor the next major code pinko protest as punishment for using the Bush Hurricane-O-Matic (B.H.O.M.) to chase illegals through the New Mexican Desert with all the lights on while playing the theme from Close Encounters on the loudspeakers.
Some guys just have no sense of humor.
Anyway.....who should walk in but Karl Rove. After the entire room jumped up and saluted and watched as Karl used the power of his mind to choke to death a subordinate that saluted too slowly he (Karl) walked over and asked to have a word with us. It seems the democrats are raising more money than we are this election cycle, and Karl asked if we had any fund raising ideas.
I have a few and want to run them by you guys to see which you would be interested in or which one you think may be a good idea.
A) Auction off the set from the faked moon landing on eBay
B) Offer rides on the Bush Hurricane-O-Matic
C) Fund an expedition to find John Kerry's military records so we could sell them on eBay
D) Lay claim to the acre of land between Pelosi's eyes and eyebrows and sell advertising.
The funds raised will be used to pay for a mission to explore hillary's flanks, in an attempt to find a bigger tract of land for the new Git-Mo Resort for Terrorists and WayWard Orphans.
Please leave your opinions in the comments.

Conservatism is to Liberalism what AA is to Alcoholism

Conservatism is to liberalism what AA is to alcoholism.
Think about it.
The alcoholic that joins AA often grows a new appreciation for a higher being.
Conservatives tend to be somewhat religious.
Alcoholics that join AA spend a lot of their time regretting their past actions and trying to right those wrongs.
"Neocons" tend to do the same, by getting more politically active and saying "I used to think that way, then I woke up."
Alcoholics tend to have lots of meetings where they discuss their plans and actions and where to go from here.
Conservatives do the same. Of course so too do the liberals but those meetings are simply planning how to foment more chaos. In this instance we can equate the meetings of liberal groups to the board meetings of companies that brew alcohol, sitting down to figure out how to push their product on new customers and keep the current ones loyal, and boy have they done that too.
It's as if the makers of Bacardi had gotten employees with stock options on the school boards and university payrolls across the world to mandate that school kids drink a portion of grog each day, only in this case the disease they are pushing is liberalism, and unlike alcoholism, where someone that wants to drink can drink to their hearts content and not affect me as long as they don't drive drunk or get stupid with someone I care about, liberalism is pushing socialism, with all the inherent theft by mandate that goes with it, and I am going to be stuck with it.
So I propose a plan.
Alcoholism is termed a disease. I don't think it is one. I think it's a personal choice for sure, an addiction for some, but not a disease. Nobody chooses to get cancer, but one must choose to drink to excess. But as long as someone wants to claim it's a disease, let's use that to our advantage and get another mental disorder on the books.
Let's really try to legally make liberalism a disease, and get these people some help.
I propose an group called, of course, L.A., Liberals Anonymous (which is twice as funny as Los Angeles is one of the hotbeds of liberal thought disorder) and make it much simpler than AA to complete.
Alcoholics Anonymous has twelve steps to completion. Twelve is a lot. For liberals we need like, oh I don't know, two.
Step one: Join L.A.
Step two: Shut Up.

Tancredo condemns continued use of giant crescent in Flight 93 Memorial

In September 2005, Colorado Representative Tom Tancredo said that he would not be happy so long as the Flight 93 Memorial still included the giant crescent. He has kept his promise. The crescent is still there, and Tom Tancredo is NOT HAPPY.
Alec Rawls has just received from Representative Tancredo a letter of complaint that Mr. Tancredo sent to Park Service Director Mary Bomar this afternoon. It notes the continued presence of the crescent:
G Gordon Liddy is on it
Alec Rawls will be on G Gordon Liddy's radio show tomorrow morning (Tuesday) from 11-12, talking about the many Islamic and terrorist memorializing features in the planned memorial. The show should be a blockbuster.
Tom Burnett Sr. is going to call in. Tancredo or his press secretary TQ Houlton may call in And YOU can call in:
A crescent and star flag on the crash site
For those who are not familiar with the memorial debacle, the original Crescent of Embrace design would have planted a bare naked Islamic crescent and star flag on the crash site:
Architect Paul Murdoch's job is to work with symbols. He did not plant an Islamic flag on the crash site by accident. But even if this were somehow coincidence, it would still be wrong to build the memorial in a shape that the hijackers claimed as their own.
Representative Tancredo was the only Congressman to state the obvious, that "the crescent's prominent use as a symbol in Islam--and the fact that the hijackers were radical Islamists," raises the possibility that "the design, if constructed, will in fact make the memorial a tribute to the hijackers." (Tancredo Press release, 9/12/2005. See Crescent of Betrayal, download 1, page xiii.)
Two days later, Tancredo's press secretary laid out Tom's conditions:
Nothing was changed
All the Memorial Project did was add some surrounding trees. Every particle of the original Crescent of Embrace design remains completely intact in the Bowl of Embrace redesign. The crescent shape was NOT removed. It was only very slightly disguised:
The graphics were recolored, and a few trees were added outside of the mouth of the crescent (lower left). Every particle of the original crescent and star structure remains. (Click here for site plan view.)
Representative Tancredo was right to demand removal of the crescent. It turns out that a person facing directly into the half mile wide crescent will be facing Mecca. That makes it a mihrab, the central feature around which every mosque is built. You can plant as many trees around a mosque as you want and it will still be a mosque. This is the world's largest mosque, by a factor of a hundred.
If you want to thank Tom Tancredo for keeping his Flight 93 promise and standing up again for the honor of our murdered heroes, his phone numbers and online email form are here.

The Honorable Mary A. Bomar
Director
National Park Service
U.S. Department of Interior

Washington, DC 20240
Dear Director Bomar,
I am regrettably writing you in reference to the proposed memorial to commemorate the victims of Flight 93 which crashed in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. As you may know, I contacted Director Mainella in late 2005 about my concerns with the design.
The appropriateness of the original design, dubbed the "Crescent of Embrace," was questioned because of the crescent's prominent use as a symbol in Islam – and the fact that the hijackers were radical Islamists. As I pointed out in my September 2005 letter, the use of the crescent has raised questions in some circles about whether the design would make the memorial a tribute to the hijackers rather than the victims whose mission the flights passengers helped to thwart.
When I received Director Mainella's response to my letter on October 6, 2005, I was pleased to read her assurance that the advisory committee and the architect were amenable to "refinements in the design which will include negating any perceptions to the iconography." I was also pleased to learn that the name of the memorial was to be changed.
Unfortunately, it appears that little if any substantive changes to the most troubling aspect of the design – the crescent shape – have been made. This deeply concerns me. As I told Director Mainella in 2005: Regardless of whether or not the invocation of a Muslim symbol by the memorial designer was intentional, I continue to believe that the use of this symbol is unsuitable for paying appropriate tribute to the heroes of Flight 93 or the ensuing American struggle against radical Islam that their historic last act has come to symbolize.
I remain committed to ensuring that this memorial is a powerful symbol for the whole nation and a testament to the courage and will of the passengers of the flight – as I am sure you are. And while I regret having to contact the Park Service again about this issue, I sincerely hope that you will direct the committee to scrap the crescent design entirely in favor of a new design that will not make the memorial a flashpoint for this kind of controversy and criticism.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Tom Tancredo, M.C.
The phony redesign
To see clearly how the redesign leaves the original Mecca-oriented cescent fully intact, note that the orientation of the crescent is determined by connecting the most obtruding points of the crescent structure, then forming the perpendicular bisector to this line (red arrow):
The green circle shows the direction to Mecca (the "qibla" direction) from Somerset PA. It was generated using the Mecca-direction calculator at Islam.com. Just place this qibla graphic over the original Crescent of Embrace site plan and the Mecca-direction line almost exactly bisects the crescent.
Looking closely at the above graphic (click for larger image), you can see that the most obtruding tip at the bottom of the original crescent structure is the last red maple at the bottom. On top, the most obtruding tip of the crescent structure is the the end of the thousand foot long, fifty foot tall, Entry Portal Wall. Here is an artist's rendering of the end of the Entry Portal Wall as seen in the Bowl of Embrace redesign. It shows how overtly this upper crescent tip remains intact in the redesign:
The redesign only added the extra row of trees on the left, behind the visitors in this graphic. Notice that these trees are not even visible to a person who is facing into the crescent. They do not even affect a visitor's experience of the crescent, never mind affect the presence or integrity of the crescent itself.
