Jay, tariffs based on wages would be a disaster. If I own a company and am answerable to stockholders, and I make widgets here at a profit of a buck a widget, and jo'es company makes widgets in china at a profit of 2 bucks a widget, who is going to get a better return on their investment? Joe's stock holders. Then my stockholders will get angry and toss me out and get someone in who will go make widgets in china.
Now, let's say that the government, spurred to action by my stockholders (who are all fabulously wealthy and influential because they invested in my brilliant widget company) decides at their behest to punish joe's widget company for outsourcing labor, and they enact a tariff on joe's widgets to level the playing field. What happens then?
Why, joe's widget company has stockholders who are screwed out of dividends because they now have a lower profit margin. The government is losing tax monies because the dividends are lower. Joe's stock holders decide to dump joes stock because it is not as attractive anymore, and at then end of the day joe goes out of the widget business, and the factory joe had in china lays off their people too.
In the meantime my company has a sudden (and artificial) level playing field. Spurred by the demise of joes widget company dividends go up, but the workers, who are after all low skill laborers, see none of this trickling into their pockets (partially because a bunch of the former workers at joes widget factory have snuck into the country illegally and I now have an almost never ending supply of cheap but experienced labor) so in the grand american tradition they form a union, which quickly enacts all kinds of regulations and union rules that I by law must live by. Suddenly my company is not as efficient as it once was, and my dividends drop again.
One day, with earnings and profit margins down I am contacted by a chinese concern that wishes to buy my factory equipment to use ina widget factory in china. Having had my fill of snotty union workers, ever increasing retirement fund costs and declining profit margins leading to decreased dividends and pissed off stockholders I make a deal with the chinese concern for our equipment, close teh factory and retire a wealthy man, leaving my former workers to fend for themselves with the low skill set they have.
All because of your idea of wage based tariffs.
So thanks for that Jay, and thanks from all my out of work former employees who would still have a decent honest job if the free market were allowed to reign and thank you so much from all of my former stockholders who now have very expensive toilet paper.

"It'll Blow You AWAY!!!!"
Of course there's plenty more, but after a few years of ranting there ought to be, don't ya' think?
The Ragged Old Flag Flies Again
I walked down the streets of my old hometown
Through crowds of people protestin'
Who said we were racists and nazis and worse
For demanding our gub'mint protect us
From criminals, thieves and terrorist scum
That would sneak o'or our borders at night
To steal all our jobs for a pitiful wage
And never give us a fair fight
They march through our streets hoisting high
Our flag that has seen us along
Making the show that this one simple act
Will prove that they truly belong
But that ragged old flag that tugs at our hearts
And has seen her share of the pain
That helped forge a nation of wretched refuse
Is being drug through the muck and is stained
She stood tall at the fort when our anthem was writ
And she led e'ery charge in the south
And she stood tall and proud when the japs came a'callin'
At Pearl Harbors doomed mouth
She flew brave and true on Mount Suribachi
And solemnly she waved on the morn
When the japanese people surrendered at last
'Neath the guns of Big Mo's mighty form
She flew in the desert
Against Rommel the fox
And Charged into Italy's hills
Thru the country of France
She forged freedom again
And finally broke Hitlers will
She sailed on the ships that delivered our boys
To the dark rancid jungles of 'Nam
And led all the fights that raged through the nights
Heavy with death and napalm
She carried the fight to the Taliban thugs
That harbored our enemies might
And led the brave charge of the Lads of Fal'ujah
Who gave of their all in that fight
She continues to sail o'er every sea
And to bring hope and light to the masses
But the latest attack on Old Glories greatness
Is being trampled in our highschool classes
The kids of today take Ol' Glory down
And use her to take a bold stand
By hoisting her up 'neath a mexican flag
Upside down, stating "This is our land"
She's held in esteem for her history is brave
For with her comes freedom unhinged
But her brave noble past is taken away
And used by the criminal fringe
But one can't fly the flag
And hold true to the heart
Of what truth Old Glory stands for
If you do not realize that by breaking the law
You haven't earned your place on our shore.
But that's exactly what we have happening today and for all the things a pious person in Frisco (and before today I would have bet good money that one of those did not exist) could pray for (plague-Oh wait they got that one-fire-they've done that one too-earthquake-again it's been done or making the city outright fall into the ocean) what are they praying to God to be granted to them?
Lower Gas Prices.
Here's a thought, you patchouli-reeking-tree-hugging-socialist-twits....you want lower gas prices? Quit protesting every time some big bad oil company wants to build a new refinery to make more gas, (which lowers prices-but then again I don't expect you nimrods to understand supply and demand) and stop demanding that the big bad oil company be taxed at higher rates when they post a less than 10% profit margin in an earning report. That simply shows off (yet again) your stupendous grasp of economics.
You people are idiots, morons and cretins, and have led me to the conclusion that all the land between the Sierra Nevada range and the Cascades, and from Central California to the Canadian border needs to be fumigated so we can start to get rid of your insane strain in cognitive dissonance, which I am sure is fatal in its' later stages....or at least one can hope.
***UPDATE***
Cao saw this post and said "Who'd they pray to? Gaia?" and it occurred to me that praying to Gaia the Earth Goddess is an even funnier thought. Much like Mark Twains' War Prayer made a point of showing that when you pray for your success you also pray for the defeat of your enemy (which is what war is about so what's the big damned deal?) the image of a bunch of Friscans praying to Gaia the Earth Goddess for lower prices on the oil ripped from her womb and boiled, strained and burned is particularly funny to me. It probably goes something along the lines of;
Oh Mighty Gaia
Bless us, your unworthy children, with lower prices on the holy sacred fuel ripped from you by evil capaitalist pigs so that we may afford to attend the protests that will stop them from raping your beauty and stealing your bounty.
PAINT IT (ALL) BLACK
I see a White House
And I want to paint it black
I'm just half-colored
But I want it all turned black
My buddy Jeremiah
Says that we were hosed
But wait until I'm in
I'll make it safe for bros
I once did lines of blow
Who cares that they weren't black
It was so long ago
And I can't take it back
Don't care religious nuts
No longer want me as their man
They're merely simpletons
And won't affect my plans
As for my wife Michelle
So glad she's finally proud
But don't cry, "Hypocrite!"
With us that's not allowed
No chance I'll fade away
Won't matter who knows the facts
It's a piece of cake for me
Love the guilt card -- hey, I'm black
Hope, hope, hope, hope, hope, hope, hope
Hope, hope, hope, hope, hope
Change, change, change, change, change, change, change
Change, change, change, change, change
My grandma blasted blacks
That's OK, I loathe whites
Threw her under the bus
As plain as the books I typed
Then there's my lovely mom
C'mon, she married black
Not once, but twice -- it's true
You never can go back
Don't fear my Muslim friends
I know you understand
With me you'll get your wish
When we withdraw from your land
That's right, I'll cut and run
I won't have to face the facts
It's so easy turnin' away
When it's not my head that's hacked (yet)
In just a few more months
The U.S. in my control
One bitter favor, though
Please don't ask me to bowl
I see a White House
And I want to paint it black
I see a White House
And I want to paint it black
Nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah
Nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah......
So the rules are thus;
The Rules:
1. Write your own six word memoir.
2. Post it on your blog and include a visual illustration if you want.
3. Link to the person that tagged you in your post and to the original post if possible so we can track it as travels across the blogosphere.
4. Tag at least five more blogs with links.
5. Leave a comment on the tagged blogs with an invitation to play.
I usually won't play these and tag other folks, and I also usually don't do what I am about to do, which is link to the site I am about to link to, but I am in one of thsoe funny moods, and the thought of the guy I am tagging looking at this post and saying "WTF?" is too good to pass up, so I will reveal who I am tagging at the end of this post.
So when I saw this meme I thought "six words? No way can I do something like a memoir in six little words. And then I was chatting with Cao telling here that from me, a six word memoir is next to impossible.....brevity is not a strong point of mine....I even quoted what my girlfriend says about me, and then it occurred to me upon seeing that phrase my girlfriend uses written in the chat window that she has the perfect six word phrase to describe me, so here is my entry into this game;
"Kender has a lot of words."
So now for the taggee....and this taggee is the one I am tagging because I am wagering they will not play so this evil meme will die right here.
drumroll please.......Meathead, you have been tagged.
Claim scientists, leftists and people that fear
Al Gore's propaganda and rising sea levels
The U.S. is evil and Bush is the devil
We must cut back on our fossil fuel
The money be damned this isn't a duel
The snow pack is melting the glaciers are going
The hurricane season is sure to be growing
The deserts will grow and cities will flood
Where once ran our rivers will soon be dried mud
Our driving and making the items we crave
Is driving our planet to a nice early grave
The fix is uncertain cuz we're not really sure
If taking away your SUV is a cure
Or maybe make everyone live in apartments
And eat only vege's so no more meat markets
Cows make the gas, as you surely know
That's making our temperatures on our home grow
To levels not seen since the cretaceous era
When dinosaurs roamed in the untainted air
Which gets me to thinking what could they have done
To make things much warmer and ruin their run
Of millions of years as the dominant species
I think Al Gore's line may be two tons of feces
I know that the dino's did not drive around
In cars or make asphalt to cover the ground
They didn't burn coal or oil or gas
Al Gore must be talking right out of his ass
The earth got much hotter way back in the day
Before man came along to ruin the way
That nature would balance the hot and the cold
To think we're so big is certainly bold
We're a pip, we're a dot in the history of time
But to think we're so powerful is purely sublime
If you want to know what makes it get hot
I have your clue, come and give it a shot
I'll give you three guesses to make this game fun
Here's a hint it's that big ball of gas called the sun
If you understand the title of this post, or it's first line, then you may be sad to learn, if you don't already know, that Gary Gygax has passed away.
I admit it...I am kind of a geek, but I am a specialized geek. I am an old school D&D geek, still using first edition modules and first edition versions of the AD&D DM Guide and Players Handbook, dogeared, marked up and beloved. I can probably quote most any page, like a Southern Baptist Preacher with a Bible. I still play, not as much as I wish, but that is about to change, as I am introducing my son and his vivid imagination to the game next week. For a child raised on video games and computer technology, it may be a bit of a change, but among my many geeky talents is Tale Telling, Yarn Spinning and Master Crofter of the Spoken Word, bardic arts, if you will, and it is a skill I have honed over many years of countless ren faires and SCA events. As I said....geek.
My geekiness is a pure geekinees. I read LOTR at 8, and have never seen the movie, refusing to taint the movie in my head with a second rate version from a fat wannabe directing geek. I can discuss in depth Dragonlance storylines, and in fact it was because of those books that I was tagged with my nick, which stuck. I make Tas look absolutely timid. In fact, if you hear someone call me by my given name, not only am I slow to answer, rarely using it, but you can be sure that they have known me since I was a wee bairn.
I won't spend a lot of time on maudlin prose, suffice it to say that D&D had an impact, not only on me but on many many people. Adam Rogers has said it best in this post here (click here).
So here's to you Gary.
We make our way to the tavern, calling for ales as we pass through the door, except for our erstwhile abstaining paladin, who asks for water, and we find seats by the fire, keeping an ear out for interesting conversation that may lead to adventure, or a scornful remark about our scarred up dwarvish traveling companion, hoping for a good brawl, and I am wearing my bracers of speed +2 that give me automatic initiative in any fight.

Illegals Begin Leaving Arizona as New Law Approaches
AGIA PRIETA, Mexico — For the first time, Mexican officials in Arizona admit there is hard evidence illegal immigrants are preparing to leave the state because a new employer sanctions law is making it difficult, if not impossible, for them to keep a job.
Illegal immigrants are flooding the Mexican consulate in Phoenix for documents that will allow them to return to Mexico to enroll their children in school, the consul to Arizona, Carlos Flores Vizcarra, told FOX News.
The upside to this? (as if there is a downside....well, there is a downside, for meheecoh, but it is simply chickens coming home to roost, a taste of their own medicine, karmic retribution and a big fat Nelson Muntz "HA-HAA" with a cherry on top and a bowl of smug satisfaction on the side.)
From the Tuscon Citizen:
Sonoran officials slam sanctions law in Tucson visit
A delegation of nine state legislators from Sonora was in Tucson on Tuesday to say Arizona's new employer sanctions law will have a devastating effect on the Mexican state.
At a news conference, the legislators said Sonora - Arizona's southern neighbor, made up of mostly small towns - cannot handle the demand for housing, jobs and schools it will face as illegal Mexican workers here return to their hometowns without jobs or money.
Don't forget about the kids they'll be towing along. To the state of Sonora I say too bad. You sure didn't worry about those conditions happening TO us when you sent your people north, so don't expect an ounce of sympathy from me or mine when they come home and do the exact same thing to you they did to us. Turn about and all that.
See? Part of the problem here (aside from the fact that meheecoh has no public welfare or medical coverage, is that meheecoh is a notoriously and historically corrupt CULTURE, which fully expects and accepts corruption in it's people and willingly pay bribes to cops, elected officials and bureaucrats to get by in life.
We, as a country, cannot change that by opening our borders and giving away the farm. The citizens of meheecoh (and I will spell it correctly when they have a majority of literate meheecan citizens) must reform their own country, and the only thing we can do until they do is secure the border and keep the ignorant people out of our country. We already have enough people that can't read that can dig ditches, thank you, we don't need more of them that can't even communicate with us.
This goes hand in hand, at the end of the day, with the islamic problem. We cannot fix islam, it is up to muslims to do that for themselves, adn until they do the only thing we can do is defend against them and kill them where need be while telling the mythical moderates to step up and fix it or join their brethren.
And that's the long and short of it....no PC...no BS....we can't fix everything, and until the folks causing the problems step up and start working on it too we can't waste precious resources tossing good money after bad hoping they'll see the light.
Comprende, Dude?
Why?
Because I have watched, in my short politically active life (20 years) my party, the party of conservatives slide downhill, especially quickly since Sir Spend A Lot and his Knights of the Bottomless Trough got into the White House in 2000.
Now, 9-11 gave us an influx of neocons, former liberals and libertarians, who are strong on national defense and precious little else that resembles conservatism, and having stepped into our party, unwittingly colluding with a media that is decidedly unfriendly to conservatives have given us a man that has, as so many tout, "a lifetime conservative ranking of 86%" as a possible candidate for president. What so many fail to look at is if you take out his Reagan years (when conservatism was the crack of the day and everybody was hitting the pipe) and recent ratings his rating drops to 50%.
I say possible presidential candidate because I hold out hope, however faint, that Juan "Come on een senor" McCains' mother ship will return and take him home before the national convention in September. Now that my choice, Fred Thompson, has gone and endorsed Juan for president I am foot stomping mad, and disillusioned (and glad I haven't framed that pic of Fred and I and hung it in a place of honor) with all this talk of unifying the party and getting behind our nominee because he beats the hell out of the other side I must call utter bullshit and toss a flag on this play.
Hell yeah he beats the hell out of the other side, but you know what?
FUCK YOU!!!!! So does a can of spam.....and do we really want a president that equates to spam?
You bastards out there wanna watch american fucking idol with religious zeal and not pay two cents worth of attention to the people who are wanting to run this country and get all your info from news bites? Fine. You're making your bed, you can lie in it, it's just too damned bad that I will have to sleep here too.
Sure, folks are saying we can't let the left get in because they'll enact socialism that we can't ever back away from, and they'll lose the war on terrorism and choosing the lesser of two evils is better than losing the war and everything we stand for, and I understand that viewpoint, but I say we've lost what we stand for but not standing for a conservative candidate.
Funny how now that it looks as if Juan is gonna get the nod that so many people are saying well he's really is pretty conservative after all, and sure, compared to the left most anything appears "more conservative" but juan supported amnesty (a fact I won't forget nor believe him when he says he changed his stance, he's a lying politician, and I wouldn't believe him if he told me I was a short pissed off conservative blogger with a coffee addiction and a mouth like a sailor---which I very much am) he supported curtailing free speech with regards to elections, he fought against Bush's tax cuts, even though now he claims to want to make them permanent.
If, by some stretch juan wins the White House, mark my words, those tax cuts will be gone. He'll have a blue congress to work with, and he has a history of chumming up to our rivals while sticking his finger in our eye.
True conservatives have been shunted to the side, and I see too many of my idealogical brethren rushing to support juan out of fear of the left, which is understandable but appears cowardly and shortsighted to me. The next president will be a four year president.
Allow me to explain;
If McCain wins, he keeps the war going, good for us, bad for the islamists, probably good for the dems, because face it, we aren't gonna win the GWOT in the next four years, and it's going to continue to cost us big and the Dems will play to that in 2012. Juan will not pass universal healthcare, a good thing, but yet another issue the dems will beat us to death on. He also will not "fix" social security which is just one more thing the left can beat us to death on. They don't actually have any plans to fix anything either, but as anyone can see empty rhetoric and hopeful language is getting them pretty far. Add the fact that Juan WILL push amnesty and will NOT secure the border, and may get the damned thing passed and the dems have millions of new voters.
Result? Dems win in 2012.
If Obama or hillary win they pull out the troops, Al-Q declares victory over the great satan, recruitment goes up, terrorist attacks increase and shit goes to hell in a hand basket. (The good thing about this is the GOP can rightfully place all the blame on the person signing the order to cut and run) Both will probably also go right at the universal healthcare, creating huge new tax liabilities (funded from where is beyond any thinking persons ability to discover, but as I have pointed out our citizenry have ceased thinking and are simply going with "who can give me what I want to hear in the quickest soundbite and make me feel good for supporting them and feeling like a good person, never mind the fact that a close examination of my positions shows them to be hollow and unworkable, they make me feel good and that's all that matters in todays' world."
A dem White House, with all of the new programs they wish to enact, funded in part, BTW, from "obscene oil profits and windfall wall street profits" will destroy our economy, as in a global economy the folks with the money will send it to where it can do them the most good, investment wise, and when your money is being taxed to death in market one you move to market two.
So if a dem wins in November they WILL stomp on the economy, raise taxes, enlarge government and drag our military through the mud and put us in a very dangerous and precarious position, most likely costing us many more American lives in terror attacks here at home.
Result? That depends on our countrymen doesn't it? If the dems screw up the country as they are wont to do (and they WILL) AND the electorate actually realizes it and wakes up AND we find an actual conservative, not a conservative of convenience and good moods, AND we run on a platform of CONSERVATIVE PRINCIPLES (Strong national defense, including secure borders and no reward for law breakers, lower taxes, smaller government etc etc you know what they are) then we CAN win the White House, and keep it for years, IF WE DESERVE TO LEAD!!!!!
If we keep trying to act like democrats we get what we deserve and I don't want any part of that party.
In the meantime we support local, county, state and federal campaigns of CONSERVATIVES and tell the GOP when they call for money to KYA until they figure out that an influx of 9-11 neocons notwithstanding this is STILL the party of CONSERVATIVES and as long as they are becking moderates and traitors they may as well call the kos kids for money.
Now I know you're saying "Dude, you're nuts, we can't let the left win, it's too critical right now with iraq."
I agree with you that Iraq is critical.
But I also believe that we aren't dead yet. American Exceptionalism is still there, in the undercurrent of our national character. It is flowing through the veins of most every one of us, even many of those on the left, but it has been buried by years of peace and prosperity and I firmly believe that only in adversity do we truly shine, overcoming tremendous odds to win the day, setting once again that example of a freedom loving people who, when thrown to the ground get up with a grimace and a glare and kick the ever loving shit out of the evil that constantly knocks on the gates of the city.
Our enemies are within AND without, and only be defeating our enemies within can we have the freedom to defeat those enemies at the gates, and if the only way to defeat them is to let them have free rein to show their true colors, setting us in a position of danger, then we must do it.
Sometimes one must amputate a limb to save the body.
The only way to win this war and save the republic, I fear, is to let something fester until it shows itself and we can cut it out.
Please pass the scalpel.
